Sustainability Considerations
At RecCreation we aim to be “sustainability conscious”. That means we strive to take into consideration our environmental, social and or economic impact on the people, organizations & communities we do business with.
Here are the ways in which we’re taking account:
-
a. Greenhouse Gas Reduction
Our servers are hosted in a region of Canada powered almost entirely by hydro-electric dams, a greenhouse gas–free source of renewable energy. In addition, our systems are designed to be lightweight and efficient, reducing computational overhead and therefore minimizing indirect emissions. We are mindful of data retention and avoid unnecessary storage, further reducing energy consumption.
-
b. Energy & Water Reduction
Demand-based auto-scaling servers and “no-mainframe” database architecture means our systems never use more power than required at any one time. Our systems are strictly air-cooled (not water-cooled) and optimized for low resource consumption.
-
c. Support of the Local Economy
All services we purchase will derive from Canadian and Nova Scotian sources where they exist. If there is a need for localized staff, we will seek to hire from within the municipality, in full compliance with labour laws. This keeps investment and employment within the community.
-
d. Occupational Health & Safety and Active Living
As we have no offices, we contribute by eliminating commuting emissions. More importantly, our software directly advances active living in the community: it makes recreation programs easier to access, register for, and manage, encouraging higher participation rates and healthier lifestyles.
-
e. Renewable Resources & Reuse
We are committed to purchasing new products only when existing materials cannot be reused, and only using products from renewable sources where they meet requirements. As a digital company with no offices or physical goods, the need for new products is very limited.
-
f. Avoidance of Toxic Materials
We avoid toxic materials by relying on cloud hosting providers who are equipped to decommission and recycle obsolete hardware responsibly. Our choice of partners ensures environmental impacts are minimized.
-
g. Fiscal Responsibility & ROI
Our pricing plan caps the cost of service to a flat annual fee, instead of exposing you to the the risk overages with a more common usage based pricing model. This fixed annual fee allows more predictatable budgeting and alignment on our shared goal to increase recreation participation in the county. Our advanced administrative reporting, capable of rolling up analytics and financial data from all overseen organizations, allows municipal staff and committee members to demonstrate to leadership & council the community impact of their investment in our services.
-
h. Life Cycle Costing
Our services are package-free and continuously updated (“evergreen” cloud-hosted). Municipalities do not face large periodic upgrade or replacement costs, which reduces waste and ensures long-term value. We also offer pricing discounts for 3- and 5-year commitments, allowing stable costs over the life of the service.
-
i. Inclusiveness / Accessibility
We are committed to WCAG-compliant accessible web standards, ensuring compatibility with screen readers, high-contrast needs, and colour-blindness–friendly design. Our platform reduces barriers for underrepresented groups by making registration transparent and convenient. Access to recreation services will be inclusive for all individuals wishing to participate, subject only to the policies of the organizations themselves.
-
j. Diversity
We celebrate diversity of identity, background, and thought. As a Canadian/Nova Scotian company, diversity is an undeniable part of who we are. Our platform also serves diverse populations—families of varying sizes, income levels, and abilities—ensuring broad community impact.
-
k. Fair Wage & Labour Standards
As a Canadian company, we are fully supportive of and compliant with Canadian labour laws and standards, both locally and internationally. We further commit that any subcontractors or partners we engage must comply with fair labour practices and human rights standards.
-
i. Waste Reduction
Our services are entirely digital: we produce no physical goods, hold no offices, and make no commutes. Features such as digital waivers, receipts, and registration replace paper-based processes, directly reducing waste for both the municipality and residents.
Additional Social Value:
Our software itself is a sustainability tool. By simplifying access to recreation, it increases participation, improves public health outcomes, and strengthens community ties—delivering social sustainability beyond our own footprint. As usage grows, the environmental cost per participant actually decreases, making the platform an efficient and scalable contribution to the municipality’s long-term sustainability goals.
